Zinc Ore
Zinc ore is primarily composed of minerals such as sphalerite (zinc sulfide, ZnS) and smithsonite (zinc carbonate, ZnCO3). Zinc is an essential metal used extensively in galvanization (coating iron and steel to prevent rusting), alloy production (such as brass), and in the manufacture of batteries and various chemicals. Sphalerite is the most important zinc ore, and it is usually found in association with other sulfide minerals. The extraction of zinc from its ores involves processes like crushing and grinding the ore, flotation to concentrate the zinc minerals, and roasting to convert zinc sulfide to zinc oxide. This is followed by reduction with carbon or electrolysis to produce pure zinc.
